Today I found a website dedicated to one of the most interesting ideas to come across indie music/videos in a long time. The site is La Blogotheque and it is dedicated to showing somewhat home movie-like videos of bands performing live in Paris. What is unique is that all of the locations the bands are performing at. The bands play in almost any location, from literally on the street (check out Tapes n' Tapes' "Insistor" video) to very small cafes or the subway. I thoroughly reccommend watching all of the videos, even if you have not heard of the band. It is some amazing stuff. I only wish I could have run into a filiming while I was in Paris a week ago.

Spring Break and Fallas Overview

The past couple of weeks have been crazy to say the least. The first week of March I was in Paris and Prague for spring break. I fell in love with both cities and I am praying that I get another chance in my life to see them again. Those 10 days that I was gone were very tiring and somewhat stressful (with things like Vanessa booking the wrong flight from Prague to Paris), but in the end I had a great trip.

While in Paris we went to all of the typical tourist attractions, but in additon went walking (almost 3.5 miles everyday) through the city to see the parts of Paris that tourists do not normally see. I think this could have been the reason for me having such a wonderful trip. It was incredibly nice to see all the families playing in the parks together and going out for a Sunday brunch. These type of things you don't typically see in big cities in America. I have to say, it was pleasant suprise. The French people were incribly nice and helpful to Vanessa, Jaleh and I. Vanessa and I even got French lessons the night we arrived from a waiter at a small restaurant we went to. By the end of the trip I had picked up even more French.

Funny story from Paris (one of many):
The first hotel Vanessa and I stayed in while in Paris was in the south part of town in a quiet, family oriented area of Paris. We arrived at the hotel at about 2:00 p.m. and began getting settled into the hotel. Within a half hour, we could hear the woman in the room next to ours giggling and talking loudly (mainly "oui" and such). It did not take us long to realize that they were having sex, which made it incredibly awkward for both Vanessa and I. We laughed it off and went out for a late lunch. To our suprise, when we returned the couple was still at it, and to our further suprise this couple went at it about every 4 hours for a good hour and a half each time, including at night. Every morning we were at that hotel, Vanessa and I were woken up at 6 am to this woman screaming, or squealing to be more accurate. This honestly continued EVERYDAY. Personally, I do not understand how it is possible, nor do I want to know. All I cared about was being woken up to that woman's voice every morning.

Prague was a bunch of fun too. Vanessa and I took a 6 hour walking tour through the city. It may sound like a lot of walking, but everything in Prague is so interesting that you do not realize how much you have walked. Our tour guide was really informative. I really did not remember from my history classes that so many important events in European history happened in Prague. Our tour included a "traditional Czech lunch" as well as a free beer at 10:30 in the morning. Obviously, Vanessa and I opted for the cup of coffee, but we did have Czech beer for lunch. It was a lot less bitter than American beer, making it a bit more delightful to drink. The tour also included a ghost tour that night, which was a lot of fun. Because that city is so old and full of history of alchemy and magic, there are many legends about ghosts and other magical creatures. While on our tour Vanessa and I met this really cool girl, Crystal, from Australia. She was living in the UK, but on a month and a half vacation through parts Europe. She had a couple of crazy stories to share with Vanessa and I, which made the walking tour even more interesting. Overall, our time in Prague was a bit too short and I really hope to be able to go back someday.

This week Valencia has been celebrating Fallas; a festival consisting of fireworks, giant papiermache figurines and TONS of tourists. Everyone in our program had friends or family staying in their dorms for the festival. Vanessa had her friend, Danielle, and her boyfriend, Roland, stay for a while. I love them both, and wish they didn't live all the way in Miami. My roommate, Lindsay, had her cousin, Lauren, stay for the week. Lauren is very full of life and incredibly nice. I was not looking forward to having to share my room with an extra person, but I am glad to have met her. Tomorrow, Monday, we do not have class because it is the last day of Fallas. On the last day all of the hundreds of figures will be burned, and the city will go back to normal. It has been a lot of fun being a part of the festival so far, and I am not looking forward to it ending, mainly because I will actually have to go back to school work and class, that is until I leave for Barcelona and Milan in about a week. :)

Wayne Coyne on NPR

Since being in Spain I started listening to NPR regularly online. This week, Wayne Coyne from the Flaming Lips read his essay, "Create Your Happiness" on the segment, This I Believe. It was really interesting and deserves a listen. I have to agree with everything he said, and it is what I have been trying to figure out how to do for quite a while now. Let me know what you think.

My week long trip to Madrid and many surrounding cities was amazing. I attended ARCO (International Contemporary Art Festival), which was an incredible experience. Check out my flickr page for a massive amount of pictures, they pretty much explain themselves.

Yann Tiersen in Valencia

Since I am missing so many amazing shows in Tallahassee this semester (looking at you, Yo La Tengo and Ratatat), being able to see Yann Tiersen live is a true treat. It's the night before I fly to Paris for a week, so things could not be better.

Tomorrow I am leaving for Madrid for a week. Many pictures and stories will be shared when I get back next Sunday.

Peniscola

Last Friday we visited this lovely town called Peniscola (accented i) located about 2 1/2 hours north of Valencia on the coast of Spain. It was a dreary winter day so the town did not have very many people in it. Apparently during the Middle ages lone of the Popes lived in a castle located on the shore of the city. This was my first castle vist, and it was a lot of fun. Our tour guide was incredibly well versed on the history of this city and Europe during the Middle Ages (a bit "DaVinci Code"-like in the way he described the events). Here are a couple of pictures from the day. Check my flickr page if you want to see additonal pictures. In additon, we found an amazing Jungle Gym of sorts that entertained us for far longer than it should have.

The City of Arts and Sciences consists of 4 large buildings (Science Museum, Art Museum/Opera house, Aquarium and Imax Theater). It was built by a famous architect whose name espaces me at the moment. He has built/designed many buildings throughout the world including one in NYC. All of the buildings are as amazing on the inside as they are on the outside.

Happy holidays.

A little note to say that beginning now, I will be documenting my trip abroad to Valencia, Spain courtesy of FSU. Meaning pictures, music, art and ancedotes will frequently posted. I will try to post daily, but I am a horrible frequest blogger, but I will do my best.

I will be creating a travel mix soon. The playlist should be up in a couple of days. As expected it will be called Oh Valencia! and somewhere on there will be the gem of a song by the Decemberisits.

School has been a b*tch so not a whole lot of time for posting BUTTT....

I will be going to see Nouvelle Vague in Orlando this Friday. Should be good. Looking forward to some amazing covers and seeing the wonderful Christina.

Today has been the first nice day in Tally since...well the end of winter. Makes you really angry you have to spend all of your time inside at class or at work.

In other news, I recently purchased a Holga Camera which proves to be a LOT of fun. So many different types of accessories and such that I really have to limit myself on how much I will spend (and everything is pretty cheap...making it even harder to not just buy everything). I just need to find out where around here will develop the film for it. I have a feeling if I walked into my local drug store they would look at the film in bewilderment.

Valencia Here I Come.

Thanks to FSU's International Program I will be traveling to Spain for 15 weeks this spring. I cannot express how excited I am. Really. Couldn't even begin to write this feeling out in words. The beauty of Valencia is profound and apparently I will be able to see the large yachts practicing for the American Cup which is sponsored by Louis Vuitton. Silly that a couture fashion designer sponsors a regatta, but who am I to question it? So here are a few pics of Valencia, just in case you have never seen/heard of it.

In other news staying at work until 6:30 (or later) to wait for the phone guys to finish working really sucks. I swear they are taking as long as possible because they have no lives of their own and want me to suffer with them.

To commemorate my first ever post on this particular blog, I shall put up some of my favorite stuff in general right now, and a pic or two of the latest show I attended (Now It's Overhead with Summer Birds in the Cellar). Enjoy.

1st thing first, this is a print that I recently purchased for really no reason other than I fell in love with it. It is by KozynDan.

2nd thing...second? I am very indifferent about school starting although the upcoming shows will be something to look forward to while I'm bored in my business calc class. Now only thing left to ponder about is what to dress up as for the BSS show on Halloween.

3rd. I cannot wait until the new Borat movie comes out over here. Been a fan for a while and a full feature film will surely be funny as hell. I have to say the short on Youtube with him hunting is priceless:
